I know what you're thinking. "I'm a Legion fan, this is a Legion blog! OK, so Superman is part of the Justice League, and was part of the Legion, but why should I care about the Suicide Squad? The story's not even set in the 30th Century!?"
Fair enough. I'll give you 3 reasons...
Number One: Emerald Empress! In issue #1 of the mini series we learn that she's been locked up and forgotten (a sad fate of all things Legion since the New52).
Someone breaks her and several other villains out of their prisons, recruiting them for a mission. That person is Max Lord, and he seems to recognize that there is something off, changed, about this "Rebirth" world, and he needs these five villains to help him put it right.The Emerald Eye of Ekron agrees, but the Empress needs to find "the Legionnaire"...something Max claims to have information about.
Amanda Waller, head of the Suicide Squad, explains that the Empress "claims to be from the future" and says the Eye has similar properties to Green Lantern tech.
In the fourth issue, she battles Superman while warning him about the future, before fighting two Green Lanterns and then withdrawing into the Eye. Before she disappears though she says she has to find Saturn Girl!
The Emerald Empress is completely missing from issue #5, and only appears for a single panel in issue #6...but, we'll get back to that...
Number Two: Lobo! No, not that lame New52 Lobo...I'm talking the fraggin' Main Man!

THE Lobo! The Lobo that stood side by side with Vril Dox, Brainiac 2, of L.E.G.I.O.N. and R.E.B.E.L.S. And if you don't share my love of the last Czarnian...well, Batman detonates a Suicide Squad brain bomb that was implanted in him.
Like the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though...it's just a flesh wound.
Number Three: That single panel from issue #6.
Right there, in a single panel, I think we just saw the rebirth of the Fatal Five...and I'd bet Saturn Girl and the Legion aren't too far behind!
There...I didn't even slow you down by detailing every aspect of the battles between the Justice League and the (very movie inspired) Suicide Squad. Or the oddly amusing friendship between Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman, or the return of Eclipso, and hints about the Justice Society. So, if any of that interests you, check it out! It was definitely a fun read!

According the solicits, in "Batgirl Annual #1", Supergirl and Batgirl break into Arkham Asylum and discover someone whose discovery "will lead to a much, much bigger story". And in "Supergirl #8" Superman -who we've been said will find out about Saturn Girl in his cousin's book- and Supergirl team up to fight the Emerald Empress.
ReplyDeleteSo I think it's obvious: Supergirl will find Saturn Girl in Arkham Asylum -and I wonder if Imra's telepathy will make Kara remember the Pre-Flashpoint universe-, and later Kara and Clark will team up to fight the Empress and possibly find the Legion.
So yes, the Legion is finally being reborn. It was about time.
We intend to get those issues and post more news if (when?) it's worthwhile.

I don't know the Legion terribly well. I like this Emerald Empress character. She's my type of superhero.
